AFC issues Title Deeds to Taveta Squatters -2018
31st January, 2018. Agricultural Finance Corporation began issuing title deeds to squatters living on a piece of land belonging to the former Taveta MP, Basil Criticos to pay for a loan he received from the Corporation. The event was presided over by the Agricultural Finance Board Chairman Hon. Franklin Bett supported by AFC Managing Director Mr. Lucas Meso, Board members, AFC staff among other guests. They were accompanied by Taita Taveta County leaderships; Dr. Naomi Shaban who is the area MP, the Taita Taveta Senator, Johnes Mwaruma, County Commissioner, Kula Hache and land officials among others. The settlement programme followed an agreement between AFC and Mr. Criticos to settle the landless. In 2017, Criticos and AFC agreed that the latter would sell part of the more than 7,200 acres owned by the former legislator to settle about 5,000 squatters in the region. The squatters were not getting land for free since they had to raise thousands of shillings to buy the land, by 30th January 2018 about 400 squatters of the projected 5,000 landless people had raised Sh 65 million to pay the Corporation for their share. During the event, AFC Managing Director Mr. Lucas Meso and Taveta MP confirmed the Government had agreed with Criticos to sell part of his land to recover a loan of more than 400 million. Mr. Bett and Mr. Meso issued 484 title deeds to those squatters who had fully paid at Eldoro and Mrabani villages in Taveta Sub-County. Public institutions, among them Eldoro Girls High and Eldoro Primary schools, were among the beneficiaries. Hon. Bett used the opportunity to urged those who had not paid to hurry up so as to get the vital document which will signify ownership of the pieces of land they were now occupying Bett warned those who received their titles not to sell off the land advising that they could use the same to uplift their living standards.
