NYANZA/WESTERN- ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION
Tree planting is recognized as one of the most engaging, environmentally friendly activities that people can take part in to better the planet. Trees provide a multitude of benefits, both long and short term. They give us clean water to drink, air to breathe, shade and food to humans, animals and plants. Trees provide habitats for numerous species of fauna and flora, firewood for cooking and heat, materials for buildings and places of spiritual, cultural and recreational importance. Trees are very important for the global environment and the health of the species that live there, and they need our unconditional care and protection. On 23rd March, 2021, the Corporation undertook the exercise of weeding, replacing of over 100 dying trees at Shikusa Prison. A fence was also erected to control the interference from animals grazing within the tree forest area. The program was undertaken in collaboration with Kenya Forest Service for a period of 3 years and has seen over 4,000 trees planted in the region. This exercise was carried out as part of the Corporation’s CSR following a presidential directive that all Parastatals/State agencies allocate at least 10% of the CSR budget to planting tree seedlings for afforestation.
