Stimulating Investment Through Agriculture in Trans Nzoia County: A Visit to Kirika Farm
The Chairman of the Board, Engineer John Mruttu, led a delegation to Kirika Farm, situated in Endebeess Division, Chorlim Location, Trans Nzoia County. This visit aimed to explore and encourage investment opportunities within the region. Kirika Farm boasts an impressive range of agricultural activities, spanning 300 acres of seed maize, 10 acres of sorghum, 30 acres of seed beans and flower production, 20 acres dedicated to tree cultivation and coffee production, as well as 8 acres of horticultural production for cabbage and 4 acres for French beans. To facilitate the establishment and expansion of Kirika Farm, the Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC) provided a horticultural development loan. This financial support enabled the purchase of essential infrastructure such as pipe networks, drip irrigation kits, machinery, equipment, and tools. Additionally, the loan facilitated the procurement of inputs and the construction of a water reservoir. Situated between two permanent rivers, Kirika Farm benefits from its strategic location. The project area houses four water tanks supplied with water from the nearby River Lugoi. Water is pumped from the river into the reservoir and then connected to the tanks using gravity. This abundant water resource supports the irrigation of 22 acres of farmland through a highly efficient drip irrigation system. Kirika Farm has secured valuable contracts with prominent companies, ensuring a ready market for its produce. East Africa Malting Limited has partnered with the farm to source sorghum, while Vegpro Limited relies on Kirika Farm for French bean supply. Kenya Seed is another key partner, providing seed maize, and Bubayi Products Limited engages in the procurement of seed beans. To effectively manage operations, Kirika Farm has employed a skilled workforce. A farm manager, farm clerk, senior supervisor, and supervisors oversee the farm's day-to-day activities. Additionally, over 150 casual farm workers contribute to the smooth running of operations. The visit to Kirika Farm highlights the exciting investment opportunities present in Trans Nzoia County. With its diverse agricultural production, access to water resources, and established market partnerships, the farm serves as an exemplary model for stimulating investment and driving economic growth in the region.
